Welcome from the Swarthmore Democratic Committee
Swarthmore Split approved and challenged!
The electoral split of Swarthmore has been approved by the State House and Senate and signed into law by Governor Corbett.
As of January, 2012, eleven suits statewide challenging this legislation have been filed including a suit challenging the splitting of Swarthmore.
Gerrymandering is proposed for Swarthmore!

As we all know, elections have consequences. One result of the November 2010 election is being felt in the Republican’s plans for the redistricting of congressional and state electoral districts throughout the state, including Delaware County. The recently approved Republican proposal would have the effect of splitting Swarthmore’s House representation between two districts. Northern would remain in the 161st district, while Western and Eastern would be split and gerrymandered into the 159th, currently held by Rep Thaddeus Kirkland (D). This map protects the 161st district incumbent, Rep. Joe Hackett (R) from the efforts of a Democrat to unseat him. The map proposed for Swarthmore may also confuse residents about who represents them.
This power grab by the majority Republican party is in direct opposition to the State Constitutional mandate that requires municipalities to be kept together where possible. Three other municipalities similarly affected are Haverford, Darby and Yeadon.
